Surveys indicate that most database servers operate at far less than their capacity allows, which means businesses are wasting money and IT is doing additional work. To counter this wastefulness, organizations are increasingly turning to server consolidation as one means of cutting redundant costs such as backups, monitoring, maintenance, various license fees, and technology standardization. But it’s not that simple. Due to different CPU speeds, CPU core numbers, workload peaks, software releases, and application dependences and security issues, what seems like a simple consolidation exercise can turn into a daunting challenge. The danger is if too many applications are consolidated onto to few or underpowered servers, the result is upset users and interrupted business processes. This paper is aimed at introducing server consolidation by enabling IT to understand the potential, the dangers, the complexities, as well as how to perform basic server consolidation.

The associated presentation is also posted on-line. Just do a search for server consolidation.

The associated CPU Speed Test script is also posted on-line. Just do a search for cpu speed test.
