Description

Tuning the shared pool for our web applications has been one of the most challenging and adventurous performance tasks we have undertaken. It has been a balancing act between providing enough memory to prevent ORA-4031 (out of shared pool memory) errors, and not over-allocating the shared pool, as to cause latching problems and a reduction in throughput. This paper will review some of the steps taken to address the sizing of the shared pool and the associated performance tradeoffs. Some of the scripts that were utilized to quantify the adventure will be provided and others will be referenced as to their location on the web. These tuning efforts were an integral part of what PeopleSoft called the most successful implementation of student registration via the web in the country to date (June 2000).
