Description

It took Oracle more than 20 years to finally develop a compression mechanism to their table structure. The first signs were introduced in version 9, and now in Version 10 it has the minimum functionally to allow us to really consider it.

Using table compression may significantly reduce not only your storage usage but also you memory and CPU usage. Although this feature is best used in Data Warehouse environments, you may want to consider it in your OLTP databases as well. Oracle recommends that you do not use this on a highly changed table or at least do thorough testing.

As with any other option or dilemma that you may encounter during application development, the compression method should be tested in its true environment. My conclusions should never be implemented without thorough testing and you should never assume that someone else knows about your systems more than you do.
